Frequently Asked Questions

  • End grain boards are the most durable options and easiest on your knife. Since the end grain is facing up on the board, the wood fibers act as bristles on a brush. Your knife cuts in between these fibers, allowing the blade and board to stay sharper, longer.

An edge grain will have you sharpening your knife more often, but it is still more durable than a face grain.

Face grain boards are the softest part of the board, thus leaving more knife marks and require more attention to your knives.

  • Do you hold your knives near and dear to your heart? If you are an avid chef and enjoy creating various meals, you want to look at an end grain board (or maybe a few). If you occasionally cook and consider yourself a novice in the kitchen, an edge grain board might be right for you. One of our personalized face grain boards might be the best fit if you plan to use your cutting board occasionally or as a centerpiece in your home. Still can't decide? Please feel free to contact us, and we will try to match you to your new board!

  • Part of the true uniqueness of owning one of our boards is that no two will ever truly be identical. This is because wood is a natural material, and each slab tells a different story. They are all different grains, patterns, and even shades. Some walnut pieces, for example, will be lighter in color than others due to their sap content. What remains consistent is our tenacity and detail to each board!

  • Yes, we can! The sizes we have online are our standard/most common sizes. Every kitchen and person is different, and we are more than happy to customize. You can either reach out to us or fill out the custom order form to get a quote started.

  • Mineral oil helps prevent the wood from drying out and cracking. It is the bare minimum recommendation to care for your item.

Our Areo Wood Butter combines mineral oil, local beeswax, and lemon essential oil. Not only will it help keep your masterpieces from cracking, but the beeswax also creates a barrier that helps prevent bacteria-causing liquids from penetrating the wood. The lemon essential oil has disinfectant and anti-fungal properties while providing a refreshing scent. No matter what you choose, our items are made in the USA and help support other local and small businesses!

  • Do not store wood in water or by a heat source. Handwash only with warm water and soap and dry after each use. Once the wood is cleaned and dried, apply an even layer of our Areo Butter a minimum of once a month (possibly more depending on use and household conditions), using a clean cloth. Allow it to soak overnight to allow the butter to penetrate through the wood fibers. Wipe off any excess butter with a clean cloth.

For a deep clean when needed (every month is recommended) after the piece is clean and dry:

    • Pour coarse salt on wood

    • Cut a lemon in half and scrub the salt on the wood.

    • Let it sit for about 5 minutes.

    • Rinse and wash the wood with warm water and soap and dry.
